“I remember talking to a sponsee when we were out of town at a place that had a Lambda Center dedicated to meetings and I thought why don’t we have one? We hadn’t had one for a while at the time. Then at around 1995 a bunch of the people from the class of 91, got together and started talking about that, and they sort of started what’s now the West Hollywood Recovery Center. This space to me is a safe, dependable place to hold recovery. I love that my old sponsor worked here for a long time, and like the new manager here because he cares and is good for it. I like that it so accessible. There are a lot of meetings and a lot of space for all of that to go on. We need a place where we can collectively get together as a community and recover. I remember the big room before the remodel, the Old Timers meeting. It was fabulous. Everybody that was everybody was at that Friday night meeting. Everybody. It was great. There’s a lot of pillars that came to that meeting that aren’t here anymore. And now I’m the old timer. I’m the elder. I come here at least once or twice a week. It’s dependable. It’s consistent which are things that are important in recovery.”
