Recovery is not limited to a month.
It is carried forward in the way we live, serve & show up each day.
Recovery month 2026
“I began my recovery journey in New Jersey in 1983 then moved back to New York City while staying clean and sober with my old friends there for a year. I fell in love with a guy from Boston, a single parent & musician, and began my family life.
I was diagnosed HIV positive in 1987 and was handed a death sentence. I stayed clean and sober by being of service. After effective antivirals came out, I found the freedom to move on after a painful divorce and death of my beloved father. I moved to Los Angeles in September 2000 with fifteen years sober in tow.
I kept hearing about this log cabin for meetings on Robertson. I was new in town with a Thomas Guide on my lap and my two little dogs. I was crying and feeling lost until I saw a cluster of alcoholics waiting to enter the Log Cabin on Robertson. I became the greeter so I could meet people. I went to the 7:30 am meeting everyday and sat in the same seat for two years.
Across the street, the West Hollywood Recovery Center was in
progress. I jumped there for my Saturday & Sundays. With a recovery family, I became an early board member, attended meetings, kept headcount in meetings to pull our pitch together for the city, and raised money to buy the building.
We did it! No more announcements about how we may lose our meeting space! It was ours! I am grateful for that funky Log Cabin which led to our clean space at The West Hollywood Recovery Center (soon to be a sober campus).
We do recover.
